About the campaign
Back in the day, learning how to sew and repair clothes was an essential life skill which left our Nanniet [grandparents] with a bunch of extremely valuable skill sets that have been somewhat forgotten over the years. With cheap & fast fashion available to us on speedy demand, these essential life skills are, unfortunately, not considered to be essential any more.
Along the years we have lost touch with these tactile skills that allow us to put more value and appreciation into the things that we own, love & wear. We have disconnected from the importance of skill sharing and ultimately transferring them down from one generation to the next.
This is where our #NannaKnows campaign comes in. As part of Fashion Revolution Week 2020, Fashion Revolution Malta have put together this initiative in order to reconnect with our grandparents, their wisdom and their skills.
The ‘physical distancing’ we are all experiencing in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, provides an opportunity for us to connect & bond with our Nanniet in a different way - and also get creative! . Below we have listed the steps you would need to go through to take part in the campaign.
How to take part
Be curious
Step 1
Pick up the phone & call your Nanna. Have a chat & catch up
Step 2
Ask what sewing skills she may have
[be it basic stitching, knitting, fixing hems, crochet, you name it]
Find out
Step 3
Ask her if she is willing to teach you one of those skills, then find out what tools you will need to do so
Step 4
Look for the tools in your house, or get them delivered to your door #SupportLocal*
Step 5
Schedule a call with your Nanna & help her get set up, using your favourite video calling app[we recommend Google Hangouts or Zoom]
Do something
Step 6
Have the call so she can teach you the skill [& you can practice]
Step 7
Take a screenshot/selfie of you & your Nanna + photo of what you’ve learnt
Step 8
Share it on social media including your name & your Nanna's name.
